Brief Description

Round multicolored cap with ruffled bottom trim and tassel at top for infant.

Description

Round multicolored cap with ruffled bottom trim and tassel at top for infant. Body of cap is constructed of a rectangular piece of woven cotton cloth sewn together on the shorter edge, up the side of the cap. The inside edge is raw. The top of the cap is tightly gathered, probably by sewing a base stitch and pulling on the ends of the thread, leaving only a small oval opening at the top. This opening is covered with a small square patch on the exterior of the cap, which is top stitched around the folded under edges with white thread visible. Three 3” long and 1/2” wide strips of cloth has been folded in half lengthwise and stitched with white thread. The edges have been left raw. One strip is `turquoise, one is gray-blue, and one is mustard yellow. A fourth strip of the same size is used, but not sewn. The four strips have been sewn at the halfway point of each strip to the top of the cap, forming a tassel. Near the bottom of the side of the cap a narrow strip of homemade mustard yellow tape not cut on the bias has been appliqued with two rows of white thread. A strip of the black cap shows below and then a wide strip of red cloth has been appliqued to the side with black thread with the bottom seam covering the seam where the ruffle is attached to the cap. A narrow strip of blue-gray homemade tape not cut on the bias has been appliqued to the top half of the red strip with white thread. The bottom of the cap is finished with a gathered ruffle, probably ruffled in the same way as the top is gathered. The ruffle is a lighter yellow than the tape and tassel. The edge of the ruffle is folded under twice and topstitched with white thread. All stitching is made by machine.
