Brief Description

Tan shallow rounded rectangular basket.

Description

Tan shallow rounded rectangular basket. The flat base has four rounded square corners. Twill plaited in a pattern of over two, under two of 3/8” wide split palmetto stems. The sides flare out into a slightly curved rim. The Sides are woven with additional wefts. The rim is finished with ac oil of narrow split palmetto stems, fully wrapped with a 3/8” wide split palmetto stem. This coil is attached to the top edge of the basket with a wrapped 1/4” wide split palmetto stem that catches the top horizontal row of plaited split palmetto stems. The tops of the vertical split palmetto stems are either cut flush or tucked into the attached coil. A double strand of thin copper wire is looped around one of the split palmetto stems 4 1/4” from the rim and is fastened together on the underside of the basket in a tight twist forming a 1/2” loop on the underside. This loop may have been used to hang the basket on the wall and may have been added by the collector. Matches wire on 1984-06-0016.
