Multicolored rectangular bag with drawstring closure at top. Flat base constructed of palmetto bark fiber. Bottom two inches of sides are straight on the short sides and slightly bowed out on the long sides, rigid, and constructed of open coiled sweetgrass stitched together. The coils are sewn together with decorative stitching that creates continuous vertical lines about 1†apart up the sides of the bag with short, upright-pointing diagonal lines (about 3/8†long) that come off to the left of the vertical lines from the bottom to the top of the coils (about 1/4†in diameter). Each stitch catches a few fibers of the next coil above. The bottom four coils are stitched in green,t he next four in orange, and the top four in dark blue. The sweetgrass coils are laced to a palmetto fiber top with hide spaced about 1†apart. The palmetto bark fiber top is about 8 1/2†tall and is constructed of five pieces of various sizes laced together with hide with vertical seams. The hide stitches are diagonal (bottom left to top right) and are about 1†apart. Approximately 1†from the top of the bag two hide draw strings are threaded through two parallel sets of punched holes, made one on top of the other spaced about 1/4†apart, one draw string through each set of holes. The ends of the bottom drawstring angle about *†and are knotted together about 3 1/2†from the bottom and again about 1/2†from the end. The ends of the top draw string dangle about 11†and are knotted together at 6 3/4†from the top and again about 1/2†from the end. The bag is lined with mustard yellow cotton or cotton blend fabric, folded over the top of the palmetto bark fiber to make at op edge and machine stitched with the raw edge folded under, 1/4†from the top. The lining fabric is stitched together vertically in one location with the same lacing that joins two palmetto bark fiber sections. May have been intended for use as a purse. Small tear in palmetto bark fiber near join with sweetgrass coils with red thread. Appears to have been repaired at time of construction.

Tan, shallow rounded rectangular basket. The flat base has four rounded square corners. Twill plaited in the pattern of over two, under two of 1/2†wide split palmetto stems. The sides flare out into a curved rim. The rim is finished with a coil of narrow split palmetto stems, fully wrapped with a 1/2†wide split palmetto stem. This coil is attached to the right top edge of the basket with a wrapped 1/4†wide split palmetto stem that catches the top horizontal row of plaited split palmetto stems. The tops of the vertical split palmetto stems are either cut flush or tucked into the attached coil. Four inches of the coiled rim is broken off and missing.

Tan shallow rounded rectangular basket. The flat base has four rounded square corners. Twill plaited in a pattern of over two, under two of 3/8†wide split palmetto stems. The sides flare out into a slightly curved rim. The Sides are woven with additional wefts. The rim is finished with ac oil of narrow split palmetto stems, fully wrapped with a 3/8†wide split palmetto stem. This coil is attached to the top edge of the basket with a wrapped 1/4†wide split palmetto stem that catches the top horizontal row of plaited split palmetto stems. The tops of the vertical split palmetto stems are either cut flush or tucked into the attached coil. A double strand of thin copper wire is looped around one of the split palmetto stems 4 1/4†from the rim and is fastened together on the underside of the basket in a tight twist forming a 1/2†loop on the underside. This loop may have been used to hang the basket on the wall and may have been added by the collector. Matches wire on 1984-06-0016.

The slightly outwardly rounded base has four square corners. the Center 4†x 4†square of the center base is twill plaited in an open over two, under two pattern of 1/8†wide split palmetto stem leaving square open areas approximately 1/8â€-3/16â€. The rest of the basket is twill plaited in a closed pattern of over two, under two with 1/8†wide split palmetto stems for the vertical splints and 1/4†wide split palmetto stems for the horizontal splints. The sides are woven with additional wefts. The sides flare out in a slightly curved rim. The rim is finished with a coil of narrow split palmetto stems, fully wrapped with 1/4†wide split palmetto stems. The tops of the vertical split palmetto stems are either cut flush or tucked into the attached coil. Seems to small to be an effective winnowing basket. Probably made primarily for sale to tourists.

The rest is twill plaited in a closed pattern of over two, under two 1/8†wide split palmetto stems for the vertical splints and 1/4†wide split palmetto stems for the horizontal splints for the first 4 rows and 3/8†wide split palmetto stems (moving toward the rim) for the last 4 rows. The first four rows are also lighter in color than the last four rows, forming what appears to be a deliberate pattern.The sides flare out into a slightly curved rim. The rim is finished with a coil of narrow split palmetto stems, fully wrapped with a 3/8†wide split palmetto stem. The sides are woven with an additional weft. This coil is attached to the top edge of the basket with a wrapped 1/8†wide split palmetto stem that catches the top horizontal row of plaited split palmetto stems. The tops of the vertical split palmetto stems are either cut flush or tucked into the attached coil. One corner has a rounded 7/8†hole that appears to have been caused by an animal (likely rodent has what maybe small teeth marks around edges) chewing. Closed weave sections have several cracked splints. One 1/2†section of horizontal 1/4†wide splint is missing near one corner in a row nearest the open weave section. Several 1/8†splints are cracked in the open weave section and 1â€-2†sections are missing. A few small holes appear to have been caused by insect damage. In one corner there are two insect body parts. The entire surface is soiled with dirt and fiberous debris. Appears to have been heavily used.

Tan shallow rounded rectangular winnowing basket. The slightly outwardly rounded base has four square corners. The center 9 1/2†x 9 1/2†square of the center base is twill plaited in an open over two, under two pattern of 1/8†wide split palmetto stem leaving square open areas approximately 1/4â€. The sides are woven with an additional weft. The rest of the basket is twill plaited in a closed pattern of over two, under two with 1/8†wide split palmetto stems for the vertical splints and 3/8†wide split palmetto stems for the horizontal splints. The sides flare out in a slightly curved rim. The rim is finished with a coil of narrow split palmetto stems, fully wrapped with 3/8†wide split palmetto stems. This coil is attached to the top edge of the basket with a wrapped 1/8†wide split palmetto stem that catches the top horizontal row of vertical split palmetto stems are either cut flush or tucked into the attached coil. The interior of the basket is soiled with dirt, particularly in the corners, perhaps from use.

Tan rectangular upright basket. Flat base and sides. Twill plaited in a patter of over two, under two of 3/8†wide split palmetto stems, fully wrapped with a 3/8†wide split palmetto stem that catches the top horizontal row of plaited split palmetto stems. The sides are woven with additional weft. The tops of the vertical split palmetto stems are either cut flush or tucked into the attached coil. Two 1/2†wide buckskin handles attached, one on each long side. Each handle is attached at two points 4†apart to form a loop. The ends of the hide are split in two, threaded on each side of the coiled rim, and tied together on the exterior of the basket. The ends dangle approximately 1 1/2†below the knots. May have been sold as a purse.

An account of the resource
Multicolored female doll with striped clothing. Head is round with conical body, both made of palmetto fiber bark, hand sewn with a single strand of brown embroidery floss, and stuffed with unknown fiber. The face is embroidered with a straight red mouth and black and white eyes, using multiple strands of embroidery floss. Black cloth, attached to a stiff form, (possibly cardboard), represents an elaborate mid twentieth century Seminole women’s hairstyle. A strand of beads is wound around the neck three times, made of blue, red, white, and one green bead in a seemingly random pattern. The doll is dressed in a skirt and cape made of cotton. From the bottom, the skirt is made of a strip of bright yellow commercially woven fabric, with a narrow appliquéd strip sewn with matching thread, followed by a strip of aqua blue fabric with an appliquéd narrow strip of navy blue sewn with matching thread. The top of the skirt is finished with a waistband of medium aqua blue with an unfinished top edge. From the bottom the cape is made of a strip of orange with an appliquéd narrow strip of pink sewn with matching thread, followed by a wider strip of bright blue with an appliquéd narrow strip of mustard yellow sewn with matching thread. The cape is finished with a black neck band with a folded over top and bottom edge. All narrow strips are handmade folded tape not cut on the bias(?) All interior seams are unfinished. The waistband band and neck band are hand sewn closed with white thread. The palmetto fiber body has no arms and legs. The bottom has hard adhesive reside with some kind of fiber, such as brown paper, stuck to it. It appears the doll may gave been glued to something to keep it upright.

Light brown wooden stickball stick. Stick is formed from two pieces of Cyprus wood fastened together with deer hide cord, and warped at the top to form a hoop for a net. The handles are the longest part of the stickball stick at 24â€L. The net is 6†W, and 9â€L. The net of the stick is made from deer hide cord fastened through holes in the loop and knotted in the middle. The net is different with larger spaces between the hide than the Cherokee or other Southeastern tribes style. This is because Seminole stickball balls are wider and easier to catch with a larger net. This is exclusive of the Florida Seminole. Stick is in very good condition with minor wear, tear and water damage.

Set With
The accession numbers of the separate artifacts which comprise of a group of integrally related artifacts, such as musical instruments played together in an ensemble. If artifacts are associated only because they were acquired at the same time, such as several similar gourd rattles, these do not qualify for a set with notation.

Cataloging History
