Description
An account of the resource
Multicolored round lidded, handled basket with doll head on top. Flat base constructed of palmetto bark fiber. Sides constructed of open coiled sweet grass stitched together. Sides bow out from base until about 1.5†from top where they come back in two handles, located on opposite sides at the widest point. are made of a single sweetgrass coil integrated into the construction. The handles are wrapped with orange thread, which is the same color thread used in the adjoining coil. The coils are sewn together with decorative stitching that creates continuous vertical lines about 1†apart up the sides of the basket with short, upright-pointing diagonal lines (about 3/8†long) that come off of the left of the vertical lines from the bottom to the top of each coil (about 1/4†diameter). The colors change each four coils, and from the base tot op are lilac, pale pink, dark blue, red, green, orange, dark blue and red. The stitching length of the horizontal lines is fairly even. The rim is just the top sweetgrass coil. The top coil concludes with a gentle taper that produces a seamless ending. The lid is constructed with a flat top of palmetto fiber with 7 coils of sweetgrass sloping down tot he edge. A thin piece of split palmetto is sewn on the underside of the lid, to fit inside the basket rim, with purple diagonal overcast stitching. the lid coils have the same pattern of stitching as the basket, but the diagonal lines point down and to the right. The colors change every two coils, and from the base tot he top are green, orange, and dark blue (with 3 coils). A women’s doll head is sewn to the center of the lid. The body of the head is constructed of palmetto fiber. It is approximately 2: tall and 4 1/2†wide. There are four rows glass seed beads around its neck (from bottom: yellow, orange, red and dark blue), two beaded earrings (from bottom: white, large red, two yellow) and black cloth formed to look like an elaborate Seminole hairstyle. A red mouth and black and white eyes are embroidered on the palmetto bark face. the Bottom of the doll’s head cannot be seen in the underside of the lid.

Two handles, locate don opposite sides at the point where the straight sides come into make the flat top, are made of a single sweetgrass coil integrated into the construction. The pink thread is faded on exterior of basket. The rim is just the top sweetgrass coil The top coil concludes with a gentle taper that produces seamless ending. The stitch length of the diagonal lines is somewhat uneven. The lid is constructed of a flat disk of coiled sweetgrass sewn with the same pattern of stitching as the basket, but the diagonal lines point down and tot he right. The four outer coils are sewn with orange thread and the three inner coils with black. A thin piece of split palmetto stem is sewn on the underside of the lid, to fit inside the basket rim with overcast yellow stitching. each stitch catches a few fibers of the next coil above. A women’s doll head is sewn in the middle of the lid, fitting into a hole in the center of the coils. It is approximate 1 1/2†tall and 2†wide. The body of the head is constructed of palmetto fiber. The coils are sewn together with decorative stitching that creates continuous vertical lines about 1 1/2†apart up the sides of the basket with short, upright-pointing diagonal line s(about 3/8†long) that come off to the left of the vertical lines from the bottom to the top of each coil about (1/4†diameter). Each stitch catches a few fibers of the next coil above. The bottom eleven coils are stitched with brown and the top five coils are stitched with light blue-grey. The rim is just the top sweetgrass coil. The top coil concludes with gentle taper that produces an almost seamless ending. The stitching length of the diagonal line is somewhat uneven. The lid is constructed of a flat disk of coiled sweetgrass sewn with the same pattern of stitching as the basket, but the diagonal lines point down and end to the right. The three outer coils are sewn with orange thread and the inner coils with black thread. Multicolored round shallow handled basket. Flat base constructe dof palmetto bark fiber. Gently sloping sides are constructed of open coiled sweetgrass and stitched together. Two handles, locate don opposite sides at the rim, are made of a single sweetgrass coil integrated into the construction. The handles are wrapped with dark blue thread, which is the same color thread as the adjoining coil. The coil are sewn together with decorative stitching that creates continuous vertical lines,a bout 1/2†apart at the bottom and 1†at the top up the side of the basket with short, upright-pointing diagonal lines (about 3/8†long) that come off to the left of the vertical lines from the bottom to the top of each coil ( about 1/4†diameter). Each stitch catches a f w fibers of the next coil above. The bottom four coils are stitched in red, the next four in yellow, and the last three in dark brown. the rim is just the top sweetgrass coil. The top coil concludes in a gentle taper that produces a seamless ending. The stitching of the diagonal lines is fairly even. Yellow thread is somewhat faded and stained.

Tan oval shallow basket. Constructed of open coiled sweetgrass sewn together with 1/4†wide palmetto stem fiber. Flat base and almost straight sides. Sewing is diagonal and goes from the bottom right to the top left. The fiber is stitched through a few strands of the lower coil and is wrapped around the upper coil. The lacing creates vertical lines on the sides and base of the basket approximately 1/2†apart. The rim is just the top coil. The top coil concludes with a gentle taper over several inches that produces an almost seamless ending.

Multicolored round shallow basket. Flat base and straight sides constructed of open coiled sweetgrass stitched together. The coils are sewn together on the sides of the basket with decorative stitching that creates continuous vertical lines about 3/4†apart up the sides of the basket with short, upright pointing diagonal lines (about 3/8†long) that come off to the left of the vertical lines from the bottom tot he top of each coil (about 1/4†diameter). Each stitch catches a few fibers from the coil above. The bottom two coils of the side are stitched in orange and the top one is stitched in green. The 8 coils that make the flat bottom are stitched in red, each coil simply wrapped diagonally (without any decorative vertical lines). The middle two coils are completely wrapped in red so that the center of the basket is a red spiral. The rim is just the top sweetgrass coil. The top coil concludes with blunt, rather rough, cut making a clear seam. The stitching of the diagonal lines is fairly even. Visible dirt on the interior.

Sides slope out form base and then become straight and are constructed of open coiled sweetgrass stitched together. The coils are sewn together with decorative stitching that creates continuous vertical lines about 1†apart up the sides of the basket with short, up right-pointing diagonal lines (about 3/8†long) that come off to the right of the vertical lines from the bottom to the top of the coils (about 1/4†in diameter). Each stitch catches a few fibers of the next coil above. The bottom four coils are stitched with gold-yellow, the next four with medium blue, and the last two with dark pink. The rim is just the top sweetgrass coil. The top coil concludes in an extremely gentle taper (over approximately 5â€) creating a seamless ending. The stitching of the diagonal lines is fairly even, but not as even as some of the other baskets.
