Multicolored oval shallow basket. Flat base constructed of palmetto bark fiber and open coiled sweetgrass stitched together. The sides are constructed of open coiled sweetgrass stitched together. The longer sides slope gently outwards and the short sides slope gently inward. The coils are sewn together with decorative stitching that creates continuous vertical lines about 1/2†apart at the base, 3/4†apart at the top, up the sides of the basket with short, upright pointing diagonal lines (about 3/8†long) that come off to the left of the vertical lines from the bottom to the top of each coil (about 1/4†in diameter). Each stitch catches a few fibers from the coil above. The bottom three coils are stitched in aqua, the next three in red, and the next three in green, and the top three in orange. The rim is just the top sweetgrass coil. The top coil concludes with a taper that produces a sloped ending. The stitching of the diagonal lines is even.

Multicolored pedestal shaped round basket. Flat base is constructed of palmetto bark fiber and open coiled sweetgrass stitched together. The sides slope in from the bottom and then flared together. The sides slope in from the bottom and then flared out to a wider top, ending with straight sides at the rim. The sides are constructed of open coiled sweetgrass stitched together. The coils are sewn together with decorative stitching that creates continuous vertical lines, about 1/2†apart where the basket has the smallest diameter to 1†at the rim. Vertical lines have short, upright pointing diagonal lines (about 5/8†long) that come off to the left of the vertical lines from the bottom to the top of each coil (about 1/4†in diameter). Each stitch catches a few fibers of the next coil above. The bottom three coils are stitched in green, the next three dark blue, the next three in light green, and the next three in orange, and the top three in black. The rim is just the top sweetgrass coil. The top coil concludes with a gentle taper that produces a nearly seamless ending. The stitching of the diagonal lines is fairly even.

Multicolored round shallow basket. Flat base and straight sides constructed of open coiled sweetgrass stitched together. The coils are sewn together on the sides of the basket with decorative stitching that creates continuous vertical lines about 3/4†apart up the sides of the basket with short, upright pointing diagonal lines (about 3/8†long) that come off to the left of the vertical lines from the bottom tot he top of each coil (about 1/4†diameter). Each stitch catches a few fibers from the coil above. The bottom two coils of the side are stitched in orange and the top one is stitched in green. The 8 coils that make the flat bottom are stitched in red, each coil simply wrapped diagonally (without any decorative vertical lines). The middle two coils are completely wrapped in red so that the center of the basket is a red spiral. The rim is just the top sweetgrass coil. The top coil concludes with blunt, rather rough, cut making a clear seam. The stitching of the diagonal lines is fairly even. Visible dirt on the interior.

An account of the resource
Multicolored rectangular shallow basket. Flat base constructed of two pieces of palmetto bark fiber laced together with tanned white colored hide. Sides are straight on the two short sides and slightly bow on the two long sides. The sides are constructed of open coiled sweetgrass stitched together. The coils are sewn together with decorative stitching that creates continuous vertical lines about 3/4†apart up the sides of the basket with short, upright pointing diagonal line (about 3/8†long) that come off to the left of the vertical lines from the bottom tot he top of the coils (about 1/4†in diameter). Each stitch catches a few fibers of the next coil above. The bottom four coils are stitched in medium blue, the middle five are stitched in gold-yellow, and the last five are stitched in ark red. The rim of the basket is just the top sweetgrass coil. The top coil concludes in an extremely gentle taper (over a long side) creating a seamless ending. The stitching of the diagonal lines is fairly even.

Tan, shallow rounded rectangular basket. The flat base has four rounded square corners. Twill plaited in the pattern of over two, under two of 1/2†wide split palmetto stems. The sides flare out into a curved rim. The rim is finished with a coil of narrow split palmetto stems, fully wrapped with a 1/2†wide split palmetto stem. This coil is attached to the right top edge of the basket with a wrapped 1/4†wide split palmetto stem that catches the top horizontal row of plaited split palmetto stems. The tops of the vertical split palmetto stems are either cut flush or tucked into the attached coil. Four inches of the coiled rim is broken off and missing.

Tan shallow rounded rectangular basket. The flat base has four rounded square corners. Twill plaited in a pattern of over two, under two of 3/8†wide split palmetto stems. The sides flare out into a slightly curved rim. The Sides are woven with additional wefts. The rim is finished with ac oil of narrow split palmetto stems, fully wrapped with a 3/8†wide split palmetto stem. This coil is attached to the top edge of the basket with a wrapped 1/4†wide split palmetto stem that catches the top horizontal row of plaited split palmetto stems. The tops of the vertical split palmetto stems are either cut flush or tucked into the attached coil. A double strand of thin copper wire is looped around one of the split palmetto stems 4 1/4†from the rim and is fastened together on the underside of the basket in a tight twist forming a 1/2†loop on the underside. This loop may have been used to hang the basket on the wall and may have been added by the collector. Matches wire on 1984-06-0016.

Description
An account of the resource
Multicolored round shallow headed basket. Flat bottom constructed of palmetto bark fiber. The sides are constructed of open coiled sweetgrass stitched together. The sides gently bow out, then constrict, and then flare out at the rim. The handles located on opposite sides just below the narrowest point of the basket, are made of a single sweetgrass coil integrated into the construction. the handles are wrapped with orange thread. The coils are sewn together with decorative stitching that creates continuous vertical lines about 1†apart, up the sides of the basket with short, upright pointing diagonal lines (about 3/8†long) that come off to the left of the vertical lines from the bottom to the top of each coil (about 1/4†in diameter). Each stitch catches a few fibers from the next coil above. The bottom three coils are stitched in turquoise, the next two are in pink, the next three in purple, the next two in orange, the next three in green, and the top three in pink. The rim is just the top sweetgrass coil. The top coil concludes with a gentle taper, cut about 1/4†from the last coiled thread. Thus, the cut edges poke out a bit from the edge of the rim. The stitching of the diagonal lines is even.

Fuschia and green basket with fiber handle.
1) Form: Circular base. Base domed. Walls bow very slightly. No rim. Handle attached on either side.
2) Material/Color: Splint wood foundation with woven smaller pieces in wickerwork style. External is dyed bark and handle is fiber. The tan of the inside and handle is the same (R235 G214 B186) and the bark is dyed dark brown (R92 G59 B0) and pinkish red (R195 G92 B129). There is a significant amount of variation in the color, either due to fading or the dying process.
3) Construction: Splint wood base fanned out in a star burst shape that provides the foundation of the basket. Smaller woven pieces throughout. External side covered in dyed bark, with some minimal sewing at the top and a wrapped rim. The handle is twisted fiber that loops around the rim. There are several smaller twisted fibers and one that is doubled in length.
4) Decoration: Handle fibers are twisted and bark is dyed. Brighter fuschia bark at bottom (R160 G0 B109) of base shows possible color before fading.
5) Skill/Care: Knowledge of wickerwork, perhaps not mastery. Bark on outside is not uniform, however that may be intentional. Structurally good.
6) Condition: GOOD. Faded bark, slight breakage, stained fiber handles.

1) Form: Basket: Circular base, flat. Walls slope out very slightly to form circular opening. Slightly inset rim.
Lid: Top is disc of birch bark with rim that extends down.
2) Material/Color:
Basket: Tan (R235 G214 B186) sweet grass with black embroidery.
Lid: Brown (R176 G117 B36) birch bark with several faded strips of colors with variations of cream (R252 G244 B244), blue/green (R226 G240 B232) and pink (R238 G203 B211). Same sweet grass rim and black embroidery.
3) Construction: Basket: Circular coiled basket with inset rim. Vertical black lines of embroidery.
Lid: Disc of birch bark is attached to sweet grass rim with same embroidery. Rim overhangs.
4) Decoration:
Black embroidery throughout both and faded strips of colors on lid rim only.
5) Skill/Care: Fairly skilled construction. Birch bark handled well.

Description
An account of the resource
Multicolored, round lidded, handled basket with doll head on top. Flat baes constructed of palmetto bark fiber. Sides constructed of open coiled sweetgrass stitched together. Sides bow out from bottom, then are straight, the bow back towards rim to create flat top. Two handles, locate don opposite sides at the point where the straight sides come into make the flat top, are made of a single sweetgrass coil integrated into the construction. The handles are sweetgrass coil integrated into the construction. The handles are sweetgrass coil integrated into the construction. the handles are wrapped with green thread. The coils are sewn together with decorative stitching that creates continuous vertical line about 1/2†apart sides oft he basket with short, upright pointing diagonal lines (about 3/8†long) that come off to the left of the vertical lines from the bottom to the top of each coil (about 1/4†in diameter). The pink thread is faded on exterior of basket. The rim is just the top sweetgrass coil The top coil concludes with a gentle taper that produces seamless ending. The stitch length of the diagonal lines is somewhat uneven. The lid is constructed of a flat disk of coiled sweetgrass sewn with the same pattern of stitching as the basket, but the diagonal lines point down and tot he right. The four outer coils are sewn with orange thread and the three inner coils with black. A thin piece of split palmetto stem is sewn on the underside of the lid, to fit inside the basket rim with overcast yellow stitching. each stitch catches a few fibers of the next coil above. A women’s doll head is sewn in the middle of the lid, fitting into a hole in the center of the coils. It is approximate 1 1/2†tall and 2†wide. The body of the head is constructed of palmetto fiber. It has 3 rows of blue glass beads around its neck and black cloth formed, probably over cardboard, to look like an elaborate women’s Seminole hairstyle. A red mouth and black and white eyes are embroidered on the palmetto bark face. The bottom of the doll’s head can be seen coming through the underside, probably over cardboard.

Description

Tan shallow rounded rectangular winnowing basket. The slightly outwardly rounded base has four square corners. the Center 4†x 4†square of the center base is twill plaited in an open over two, under two pattern of 1/8†wide split palmetto stem leaving square open areas approximately 1/8â€-3/16â€. The rest of the basket is twill plaited in a closed pattern of over two, under two with 1/8†wide split palmetto stems for the vertical splints and 1/4†wide split palmetto stems for the horizontal splints. The sides are woven with additional wefts. The sides flare out in a slightly curved rim. The rim is finished with a coil of narrow split palmetto stems, fully wrapped with 1/4†wide split palmetto stems. The tops of the vertical split palmetto stems are either cut flush or tucked into the attached coil. Seems to small to be an effective winnowing basket. Probably made primarily for sale to tourists.

Tan shallow rounded rectangular basket. The slightly flat outwardly rounded base has four square corners. The center 8 1/4†x 7 3/4†square of the center base is twill plaited in a pattern of over two, under two of 1/8†wide split palmetto stems leaving square open areas of approximately 1/8-1/4â€. The rest is twill plaited in a closed pattern of over two, under two 1/8†wide split palmetto stems for the vertical splints and 1/4†wide split palmetto stems for the horizontal splints for the first 4 rows and 3/8†wide split palmetto stems (moving toward the rim) for the last 4 rows. The first four rows are also lighter in color than the last four rows, forming what appears to be a deliberate pattern.The sides flare out into a slightly curved rim. The rim is finished with a coil of narrow split palmetto stems, fully wrapped with a 3/8†wide split palmetto stem. The sides are woven with an additional weft. This coil is attached to the top edge of the basket with a wrapped 1/8†wide split palmetto stem that catches the top horizontal row of plaited split palmetto stems. The tops of the vertical split palmetto stems are either cut flush or tucked into the attached coil. A double strand of thin copper wire is looped around one of the split palmetto stems 51/4†from the rim and is fastened together on the underside of the basket in a tight twist forming a 1/4†loop on the underside. This loop may have been used to hang the basket on the wall and may have been added by the collector. Matches wire on 1984-06-0014.

The rest of the basket is twill plaited in a closed pattern of over two, under two with 1/8†wide split palmetto stems for the vertical splints and 1/4-3/8†wide split palmetto stems for the horizontal splints. The sides are woven with an additional weft. The sides flare out in a slightly curved rim. The rim is finished with a coil of narrow split palmetto stems, fully wrapped with 1/4†wide split palmetto stems. This coil is attached to the top edge of the basket with a wrapped 1/4†wide split palmetto stem that catches the top horizontal row of vertical split palmetto stems are either cut flush or tucked into the attached coil. One corner has a rounded 7/8†hole that appears to have been caused by an animal (likely rodent has what maybe small teeth marks around edges) chewing. Closed weave sections have several cracked splints. One 1/2†section of horizontal 1/4†wide splint is missing near one corner in a row nearest the open weave section. Several 1/8†splints are cracked in the open weave section and 1â€-2†sections are missing. A few small holes appear to have been caused by insect damage. In one corner there are two insect body parts. The entire surface is soiled with dirt and fiberous debris. Appears to have been heavily used.

Round birch bark lidded box with dense red-brown, orange, yellow, and white quillwork on lid and sides.
1. Form: The lid quillwork features an 8-pointed star in many layers of color. In the center is a star of yellow spanning 1 inch. This is outlined by a layer of orange, then red-brown, then alternating orange and red-brown. The entire star spans nearly 4.5 inches. A ring of white circles around the star, and the spaces between the points are filled with crosshatched white. A band goes around the outside of the lid, with a ring of orange bordering the outside. Around the inside of the band is a repeated design of 9 white quills lined up vertically and bunched together in the middle by a red-brown band. In the diamond-shaped spaces between these are 10-point asterisks which alternate in color between orange and red-brown. along the sides are 2 bands (top and bottom) of the same pattern. Sweet grass is wrapped around the top and bottom of the lid, top and bottom of the base, and middle of the base - bound by black stitching which holds the box together. The inside is lined with bark to hide the quill ends.

Sweet grass - faded yellow (R235 G214 B186) and tinged green
Quills - white, yellow (R232 G197 B93), red-brown (R146 G70 B26), Orange (R218 G124 B67)
3. Construction: Bark was cut, bent, and stitched into shape.
4. Decoration: Quillwork decorates the top and sides, sweet grass is wrapped around the edges.
5. Skill/Care: Indicates high skill level; expert quillwork, lining is neat and tight
6. Condition: Very good: negligible wear, label on bottom.

Collector
Collector is the person who originally brought the artifact from its place of origin and/or use. An active process is implied and the collection method tells how and why that artifact came to be collected.
As an outgrowth of their personal interests as collectors, Vincent and Elinor Ostrom built their collection over more than five decades as scholars of social dynamics, especially relative to problem solving, in communities around the world. The Ostroms founded their Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University in 1973 as an outlet to explore interdisciplinary methodologies.

An object of material culture, for instance an object in a museum collection or documented in everyday life. Usually refers to a three dimensional objects (as opposed to images).
