Identifying Navajo Jewelry
How are we able to tell specific pieces of jewlery are Navajo?
Navajo (or Diné) jewelry has a few key aspects that make it easier to identify and tell it apart from other Pueblo jewelry. One key way of identifying Navajo jewelry is by looking at the silverwork. Navajo jewelry often places an emphasis on the silverwork rather than stonework. Many Navajo pieces will have minimal stones and simplistic stonework, whereas the silver will be anywhere from simplistic to very intricate and complex designs. The Navajo people are known for their silversmithing and have some of the few identified sandcast masters. Another way of identifying if the Pueblo jewelry is Navajo is by noting if there are animal claws used. Navajo jewelry sometimes features claws from animals, whereas other Pueblo jewelry does not.
