Aspects of Navajo Jewelry
Sandcast is a silverwork technique that very few have mastered. The most notable users of this technique are Navajo. Other silverwork techniques used include riveting, cutting, hammering, soldering, stamping, and more. As for stones, the most common stones used in Navajo pieces are turquoise and coral. The Navajo pieces will typically feature a singular stone, but can sometimes feature up to two or three. The stones are typically inserted into simple bezels and do not use complex stone work techniques. Though it should be noted that there are some exceptions to this, and some Navajo artisans do use complex stonework and work with many stones. Another key element to Navajo pieces is the use of squash blossom motifs, as well as leaf and flower motifs. As mentioned, Navajo silversmiths often cast complex shapes and designs into their silverwork. These designs vary but intricate flowers, leaves, swirls, and other natural patterns are the most common.
