Lesson 29

In this lesson the idea of "each other" will be explained. It will be introduced by a series of sentences.

  1. A person is explaining to a group that he wants each one of them individually to go to his place and stay there.
    Bi̲ ramɔ wä̲ gua̲a̲dɛ kä̲ i̲yɔɔ bi̲ ramɔ tɛ̲ gua̲a̲dɛ, /cɛ bi̲ jiɛɛn.
    Each person will go to his place and later each person will stay in his place, he will not leave.
  2. A person is explaining to a group of people that everyone has a place to stay and they will find their place.
    Tɛ̲ ramɔ kɛ gua̲a̲dɛ, tɛ̲ ramɔ kɛ gua̲a̲dɛ, bia gua̲a̲du̲n jɛ̲k.
    Each person has his place, each person has his place, you will find your place.
  3. In explaining about people helping each other.
    Ci̲ ramɔ ramɔ luä̲k.
    Each person helped each person (each other).
  4. In explaining that each one helped himself.
    Ci̲ ramɔ rɔɔdɛ luä̲k.
    Each person helped himself.
  5. In explaining that each one did not do it for (on behalf of) each other.
    /Ke̲n ramɔ jɛ la̲t kɛ kui̲c raamɔ.
    Each person did not do it for each person. (each other)
  6. In explaining that they did it to each other.
    Ci̲ ramɔ jɛ lä̲t kä̲́ ramɔ.
    Each person did it to each person.
  7. In explaining that each one did it by himself.
    Ci̲ ramɔ jɛ la̲t jɛn kä̲ rɔaadɛ.
    Each person did it he by himself.
  8. In explaining that these belong to each other.
    Kä̲mni̲ ramɔ du̲ŋdɛ.
    Give each person his own.

SYNTAX

  1. [-ɔ and -tɔ] is a meaningful unit suffixed to nouns to indicate "each". However, it generally only occurs with nouns in the nominative and objective cases. In some instances where "each" might be used in the genitive or locative cases the word [diaal] -- every, all, is used.
  2. It is common to find redundancy in this type of construction. It helps to clarify the meaning. This construction with [-ɔ] is not a very strong construction and therefore one finds it limited in its usages. It generally occurs with [raan] or some noun of persons, like boy or girl.
  3. In sentences 6 and 7 the verb changes. This is because in the sentence [Ci̲ ramɔ jɛ lä̲̲t kä̲ ramɔ] the verb is what is called a "directional verb" with action going to a person. In the other sentence [Ci̲ ramɔ jɛ la̲t kä̲ rɔaadɛ] the action is not directional. This type of verb will be explained later.
