| Web Site Overview Welcome to the Hoagy Carmichael Collection! This multimedia web site is part of an 18-month project to catalog, digitize, and preserve every item in Indiana University's extensive collections pertaining to the life and career of master songwriter Hoagland "Hoagy" Carmichael (1899-1981). Carmichael grew up in Bloomington, Indiana, and graduated from the Indiana University (IU) School of Law. He composed his enduring pop standard, "Star Dust," in Bloomington, and the story of its creation has become an integral part of local history. Carmichael valued his association with the community, and as a result, he and his heirs have contributed to Indiana University many materials pertaining to Carmichael's career. In fact, the Hoagy Carmichael Collection at IU's Archives of Traditional Music offers the largest grouping of materials pertaining to Carmichael's life available anywhere. Complementing this collection are Carmichael's manuscripts and sheet music at the Lilly Library, IU's principal special collections repository, as well as materials at the IU Archives. The web site will present a complete catalog of the entire Carmichael Collection, access to selected digital objects, and supplemental research information, such as genealogy. The Hoagy Carmichael Collection contains sound recordings of Hoagy's music, letters, photographs of him and his family, print and handwritten musical compositions, and more. This site has something for every visitor. If you don't know much about Hoagy Carmichael, explore other sections of the Introduction or go to Research to read a brief biography of Hoagy. To see and hear highlights from the collection, go to Collection Highlights or take the virtual tour of the Hoagy Carmichael Room at the Archives of Traditional Music. If you are a student or scholar, you might want to go directly to the collections. If you want to see everything in a particular category of material, go to Browse. You can work through the entire collection, category by category. If you are looking for a particular item or song, try Search. November 22, 1999, is the Centennial of Hoagy Carmichael's birth in Bloomington, Indiana. Although the project to digitize to catalog, digitize, and preserve the artifacts doesn't end until March 30, 2000, we wanted to provide a sample of our work to date - to join in the celebration of Hoagy's birth. This site is a work-in-progress. As we add new material and new features, we will highlight them in "What's new." We hope you will send us your comments and check back often to see what we've been doing. Due to copyright restrictions, we cannot provide Internet access to all of the materials we have digitized. However, all digital objects are available at the Archives of Traditional Music. This web site is a joint effort of the Indiana University Digital Library Program and the Archives of Traditional Music. Our work is funded by Indiana University and a National Leadership grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). |
