Tan rectangular upright basket.
Description
Tan rectangular upright basket. Flat base and sides. Twill plaited in a patter of over two, under two of 3/8” wide split palmetto stems, fully wrapped with a 3/8” wide split palmetto stem that catches the top horizontal row of plaited split palmetto stems. The sides are woven with additional weft. The tops of the vertical split palmetto stems are either cut flush or tucked into the attached coil. Two 1/2” wide buckskin handles attached, one on each long side. Each handle is attached at two points 4” apart to form a loop. The ends of the hide are split in two, threaded on each side of the coiled rim, and tied together on the exterior of the basket. The ends dangle approximately 1 1/2” below the knots. May have been sold as a purse.
